Subsoiling - a key process in soil cultivation that is worth knowing

Subsoiling is one of the most important processes in soil cultivation, which has a huge impact on yields and overall crop quality. Unfortunately, this procedure is often overlooked, which is a serious mistake in running a farm. Therefore, it is important to understand its meaning and use it correctly in agricultural practice.

What is subsoiling?

Subsoiling is a specific agrotechnical process that involves penetrating the soil to a much greater depth (usually from 30 to 50 cm) than in standard cultivation. Specialized equipment is used to carry out this operation - subsoilers. This process helps to break up compacted layers of soil, known as the plow sole, allowing plant roots to penetrate more freely and uptake nutrients more efficiently.

Why is subsoiling so important?

Subsoiling treatment plays an important role in soil care and directly affects the condition of the crop. Below are some of the key benefits of this process that contribute to optimal plant development and increased yields:

  • Improvement of soil structure - subsoiling helps to improve the structure of the soil by breaking down layers of compacted sole. Thanks to this, its structure improves, allowing better penetration of water, air and plant roots,
  • Root digging – the technique favors stronger rooting of plants, namely it allows the roots to penetrate freely into the soil. As a result, plants have greater access to nutrients, which in turn leads to an increase in their health and yields,
  • Increasing soil permeability – this treatment contributes to increasing the permeability of the soil, improving its ability to absorb and retain water and air. Its action is particularly important for the root systems of plants, because it enables them to effectively absorb these elements so that they can grow and develop properly,
  • Optimization of fertilizer management - action subsoiler it also has a significant impact on fertilizer management. When the soil is properly loosened and permeable, fertilizers can effectively penetrate into the deeper layers of the soil, where they are better used by the root system of plants,
  • Soil compaction – process subsoiling helps to compact the soil, which has a positive effect on its bearing capacity and stability. This is especially important for light soils that can be prone to erosion and require greater stabilization,
  • Soil preparation for sowing – removal of compacted arable sole, facilitates the emergence of seeds and provides favorable conditions for plant development.

When to carry out subsoiling?

Although the right moment for subsoiling it can vary depending on many factors, usually the best time is late fall or early spring. During these times of year, the soil is often wet but not saturated with water. It is not recommended to carry out subsoilingwhen the soil is very dry, as this may result in increased soil erosion.

How to carry out subsoiling?

Carrying out subsoiling operation requires the use of specialized equipment – subsoiler. Subsoilers they can have different forms and sizes, but the principle of their operation is the same. They penetrate the soil to a much greater depth than traditional tillage tools, tearing up compacted soil layers at the same time.

An example of such a specialized device is cultivation aggregate G-4. It is an advanced model whose main task is to break the arable sole and loosen the soil, even to a depth of 50 cm. This loosens the structure of the earth, creating spaces for air and water.
